Learn to Play Craps - Tips and Strategies: Dealer Tokes

You think, “Tip the dealers? What? Losing money to the casino isn’t enough, now you tell me I have to give money to the dealers?” Yes, you should tip dealers, especially when they’re helpful. In the casino business, a “toke” is a tip. Dealers call tippers “George” or “live,” and non-tippers “stiffs.”

Dealers typically work for minimum wage (or close to it) plus tips. I compare them to restaurant servers because they provide a service and they rely on tips for their livelihood. The service that dealers provide includes properly handling your bets and winnings, answering questions about the game, being courteous and friendly, and just making your craps play more enjoyable.

Craps dealers typically share tips instead of keeping what they get. This makes your job of tipping a bit trickier. Ideally, you want to maximize tips for good dealers and minimize tips for bad ones. In terms of craps dealers, “good” versus “bad” isn’t necessarily a measure of skill. If a dealer is friendly, respectful, attentive, and funny, I won’t reproach him for being slow (he may be slow because, for example, he’s new on the job). I’d much rather be in a slow game with fun dealers than a fast game with dealers who are mannequins when they aren’t handling chips.

If craps dealers share tips, how do ensure yours goes to the good ones? You can’t. If I’m disappointed in a dealer’s service, I ensure his colleagues know I’m disappointed. When the bad one takes a break and a good one replaces him, I politely tell the good one something like, “I don’t know if Fred is having a bad day or what, but he’s been downright mean to the newbie on the hook.” The dealer knows I’ve been tipping well and he usually gets the hint that Fred ought to lighten up if they want me to continue tipping. Because dealers’ income depends on player tips, the good dealer won’t hesitate to insist that the lousy one get his act together. The good one knows, if I stop tipping, maybe others will, too.

If you’re losing during a particular session, it’s not the dealers’ fault, so don’t blame them. It’s not easy to tip while losing, but you shouldn’t base your tipping on your gambling success (or failure). When losing, if you can’t keep the same tipping pace as when you’re winning, simply slow down, but don’t stop it altogether. Always remember that you give tips for good service, not for your success at the table.

For whatever reason, most craps players don’t tip at all. I don’t know if it’s because of stinginess or just plain ignorance. Usually, you’re the only one tipping. Although not good for the dealers, that’s great for you. It means you get all the dealers’ attention and reap all the rewards. Rewards? Absolutely, positively, undeniably yes! Learning how and when to tip, as well as how you’ll benefit from tipping are part of learning the secret to craps.

A Slots Quiz From Gamingquiz

OK, Class, it’s test time. I have created this quick test for novice and veteran slot players.
I offer up this quiz in the expectation that all slot players will forever hear the sound of ‘raining coins’.

Let’s get started…

1) What is an RNG?
A. Really Nice Gambling?
B. Random Number Generator?
C. Right Number Gaming?

B. Random Number Generator: a computer chip placed inside each slot that is programmed to generate multiple combinations of symbols and payouts. A selection is picked randomly, thus determining the final outcome. A busy little drone.

2) What are the three types of slots?
A. Basic, Progressive and Bonus slots?
B. Red White & Blue 7’s?
C. Flat Tops, Megabucks and Double Diamonds?

A. The three types of slots are basic, (aka straight slots or ‘flat-tops’) that have a constant jackpot. Progressives with an ever-changing jackpot and the latest gaming trend, bonus video slots that offer a bonus round for extra winnings. Although the RNG runs all three types, there are different playing strategies for each type.

3) What is a multiplier slot?
A. Slot that has multiple graphics and symbols?
B. Pays more for more coins played on certain winning combinations?
C. Multiplies your win no matter how many coins played?

B. Stated simply, the more coins played, the better the winning payouts. Particular symbol payouts, as per slot schedule, are multiplied by number of coins played. This can mean the difference between a 2-coin payout and a 10-coin payout for max. coin in play. So, 1 bar, 2 bars, 3 bars–oh yeah!

4) What is a nudge slot?
A. Wild Symbol combination pays?
B. A certain combination nudges you to the Bonus round?
C. Paying Symbol dropping up or down on center payline for win?

C. Come on baby, drop that paying symbol down and give mama a big win.
It could be a basketball, diamond, cherry or wild symbol. You just need a little nudge up or down to that center payline and you are in the money.

5) What’s a short win?
A. A small jackpot?
B. A win just before you are running out of money?
C. A large win with a small cash outlay?

C. This happens all the time. A large jackpot is hit with a minimal cash outlay.
15 bucks gets you $1000’s. Now that’s a long win on a short chance.
Take the money and run!

6) What is “flying solo”?
A. Gambling alone?
B. Slot Players who play one coin only.
C. Only winner of a progressive jackpot?

B. I call them ‘onesies’. Slot players who play only one coin. I know I advocate wager management, but this is wager suicide. I suggest you drop down a denomination and play max. coins where at least you are in the running for the top jackpot without the ‘slot bends’ of missing out because you should have played just one more coin. The only exception here is the bonus multi-line slots.

7) EASY POINT. What’s ‘Call Attendant’?
A. Large cash hand-paid jackpot?
B. Machine is broken, needs maintenance?
C. My slot club card points have reached their limit?

A. It’s party time! Big time payday with hundreds peeled off into your sweaty, winning palms. All casino players should get this one right and truly enjoy the experience.

Online Keno and Keno’s Origin!

Keno is an old (now online casino) game that originated in China and was played over 3000 years ago by the Chinese people. The reason how the game, Keno, came to be was that in China, the emperor needed, funds to help pay for things like the Great Wall, to protect his cities, and villages, and money to fund his war crusades. The game, Keno spread all over China and was a great way to raise funds for construction and in many other areas in the empire, instead on taxing the citizens more. The Pigeon Game, that is what the Chinese keno game was called because’s the results of these games where transported to villages from cities by carrier pigeon which in turn became hugely popular. They also used character sets instead of the 80 numbers that is used today in online casinos and land-based casinos.

Chinese immigrants brought the game, Keno, over to North America when 19th century railroads where being built. These companies employed thousands of Chinese immigrants to build the railway systems that exist today. Many Chinese played this game for entertainment which lead to non Chinese people starting to play. It took no time in North America for the popularity of Keno to explode.

Online Keno and Online Bingo roughly have the same origin and are linked, plus follow similar online casinos rules. More people today play this very popular casino game then ever, and with the explosion in online bingos and online casinos the future is bright for this game.

At KenoCorner you will find great information and software to play better online and live casino KENO! http://www.casinospokerrooms.com/em/kenocorner.html

Eight Ball Billiards

The game that began as a nobleman’s sport has evolved into a barroom staple. But make no mistake the game of billiards, and each of its offspring, still retains that noble spirit.

While proper billiards is rarely found in average clubs, a number of game variations have become popular with the pub and club set. One of the most popular tournament-style billiards games is “eight ball”. In eight ball billiards, one set of numbered balls is split between two players. One players shoots for balls 1-7 (also called “solids” or “low balls”) and the other plays balls 9-15 (”stripes” or “high balls”). The first player to pocket all of his or her balls, and then legally pocket the eight (black) ball, is declared the winner.

Eight ball is an easy game with very few regulations. There are however, a few rules to keep in mind:

* When calling shots in this eight ball billiards, it is not necessary to indicate the pocket and ball when the shot is clear. If attempting a bank or combination shot however, you must declare your intention before proceeding to shoot.

* If the ball you are shooting jumps off the table, the shot is considered foul. At this time you can choose to accept the table and take a shot, or shoot again with the cue ball placed behind the head string.

* On your turn, your shot is only legal if it hits a group of your own billiard balls and either pocket a numbered ball, or cause a numbered ball or the cue ball to end up in a pocket. This does not apply to shots declared “open”, or to break shots.

* After a break shot, if no ball was pocketed and no group of balls determined, the table is still considered to be open. In other words, if a player breaks and sunk neither stripes nor solids, the table remains open.

* A game may be acknowledged as a stalemate when six turns (three for each player) are taken consecutively and the next shot will result in the loss of the game. At this point, the game is re-racked, and the original breaker takes the break shot again.

Consult an official rulebook for a more concise description of all the rules to eight ball. To play a successful game you must be willing to learn and follow the rules, and retain the noble spirit of billiards.

Casino Slot Machine

A casino slot machine is one of the most popular casino games. Traditional slot machines are coin-operated machines with three or more reels. They spin when a lever on the side of the machine is pulled. The machines include a currency detector that validates the coin or the cash inserted to play. The machine typically pays off based on patterns of symbols visible on the front of the machine when it stops. Modern computer technology has resulted in many variations on the slot machine concept. Currently casino slot machines are the most attracting gambling method in casinos and they generate about 70% of the average casino’s revenue.

A person playing a casino slot machine purchases the right to play by inserting coins or cash, into a designated slot on the machine. The machine is then activated by means of a lever or button. The game itself may or may not involve skill on the player’s part — or it may create the illusion of involving skill without actually being anything else than a game of chance. The object of the game is to win money from the machine. The game usually involves matching symbols, either on mechanical reels that spin and stop to reveal one or several symbols, or on a video screen. The symbols are usually brightly colored and easily recognizable, such as images of fruits, and simple shapes such as bells, diamonds, or hearts.

Most games have a variety of winning combinations of symbols displayed on the machine. If a player matches a combination as per the game rule then the slot machine pays the player cash or some extra games. Casino slot machines are programmed to pay out as winnings between 82 to 98 percent of the total waged money. The minimum payout percentage varies among jurisdictions and is typically established by law or regulation. For example, the minimum payout percentage in Nevada is 75 percent and 83 percent in New Jersey. The winning patterns on slot machines and the frequency at which they appear are carefully selected to deliver a certain percentage of the cost of play to the “house” (the operator of the slot machine), while returning the rest to the player during play. Suppose that a certain casino slot machine costs $1 per spin. It can be calculated that over a sufficiently long period, such as 1,000,000 spins, that the machine will return an average of $950,000 to its players.

There is a probability factor to the placement of casino slot machines on the gaming floor, but the highest paying machines are not often placed in high-traffic areas. Typically, machines of similar payback percentages are grouped together, with 1% or less difference between the groups of machines.

How To Win At Punto Banco (Baccarat)

Punto Banco is a variation of the European Baccarat, played primarily in North America, Canada and Australia. It is also (along with Sic Bo, Pai Gow and Keno) one of the Big Four Chinese gambling games and, as such, can be found in the separate Asian areas of casinos worldwide.

The big difference between Punto Banco and Baccarat is that there is no opportunity for the player to act as banker. But as explained in this article, that makes little difference to the clued-up gambler.

The aim of the game is to predict whose hand, the Banker’s (Banco) or the Player’s (Punto), will be closer to the value of nine. You can also bet on the possibility of a tie.

The point values of the cards are very simple to follow. All 10’s and picture cards have a value of zero, and all other cards (Ace through 9) are worth their face value (Aces are always worth 1). When the total of two or more cards is greater than 10, the point total is reduced by 10. For example if a hand is dealt an 7 and a 5, resulting in a total of 12, 10 is subtracted, leaving a point total of 2 for that hand.

The important point to bear in mind when playing Punto Banco is that winning depends on the hand you bet on, not the hand you play.

If the hand that you bet on wins, you are paid double your bet, unless you bet on a tie. If you bet on a tie, the payout is eight times the amount you bet. If you bet on the Banker’s hand, and win, the House charges a 5% commission.

If you bet on a hand, and the hand loses, you lose your bet. If you do not bet on a tie, and the hands tie, your bet is returned to you.

A quick look at the odds in Punto Banco will show where the house has its edge - in the ‘Tie’ bets. Probability states that this bet will win less frequently, and so the pay- out is correspondingly large, with the aim of tempting the player. However, as with most casino games, the two do not exactly match - the odds of ‘Tie’ winning are 10.5-1, though the payout is only 8 to 1.

The two main bets (Banker and Player) are similar in that their probabilities are equal, though the payouts and house edge differ.

The Banker bet is considered the safest as the house edge is closest to 1%. In all casino games, the house edge is lower only in some bets on craps. The chances of the Banker bet winning are slightly higher than the Player bet, but bear in mind that if the Banker does win, a 5% commission, called the vigorish, will be deducted from your win. For example, if you bet £200 on the Banker, and win, your take will be £390, not £400 as on a £200 Player bet. Despite this, with such a low house edge, the Banker bet is the safest bet in the long run.

The Player bet has a slightly higher house edge, usually around 1.25%. There also is no vigorish, so nothing is deducted from your winnings. There is a margin here for profit for those wishing to take a slightly bigger risk.

Some players find that betting on the Banker seems somehow unnatural, as though they’re betting against themself. This probably comes from playing Blackjack, where the player is always trying to beat the banker.

Remember, in Punto Banco, the winner is the one who predicts the winning hand, not the one who plays it.

Whether you use the ‘Tie’ bet or not comes down to your gambling style. If you’re looking to win big, it has to be considered as an option, so long as the rules of our betting strategy are followed:

limit your losses at the outset - decide how many losing bets you’re prepared to make in the session;

quit when you’re ahead - when the ‘Tie’ bet wins, pocket your winnings and switch bets or games.

So my recommended strategy for finding the edge in Punto Banco would be to stick with the Banker bet in the main, but occasionally ‘test the water’ by playing 4 or 5 bets on Tie, always remembering to stop if you’re losing and switch back if you’re winning.

Andy Follin is a dedicated leisure gambler and author of http://www.fortunepalace.co.uk, a site which explains the rules, odds and strategies of the Big Four Chinese gambling games – Punto Banco, Sic Bo, Keno and Pai Gow.. He is also an ardent believer in que sera, sera – whatever will be, WILL be.

Some NBA Betting Tips Before Tipoff

The National Basketball League tips off another season Oct. 31 with both bet makers and bet takers sifting through the debris of last year’s results in hopes of finding NBA betting clues to the upcoming campaign.

From a wagering standpoint, the most important thing to know is that oddsmakers approach the NBA a bit differently than they do most other major sports, relying far less on Power Ratings, the numbers that form the price-making building blocks. There are several unique aspects to the NBA game that limit the effectiveness of Power Ratings:

Schedule: In order to keep travel costs down, NBA teams often embark on lengthy road trips. How far a team has to travel, how many time zones the players cross and how many games they’re forced to play in a short time frame are crucial factors. A team in the east usually has a very difficult time negotiating a swing through Texas that includes three games in four nights in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. A team from the West Coast might struggle with an Atlantic coast travelogue that includes visits to Miami, Orlando, Memphis and Charlotte, for example. Because basketball is a series of cross-country one-night stands, more than any other sport, fatigue is an overwhelmingly important factor and NBA betting should reflect that element.

The Yin-Yang Factor: It may seem strange but if a team gets blown out one night, the next night they usually play a much better game. Every game is different, of course, but if a good team such as the Pacers were blown out by the Pistons, they’d be even more likely to blow out their next opponent and the NBA betting lines would echo that.

Injuries: Unlike football, where a team has a whole week to rest an injured player, or, if need be, prepare another player to take his place, with the day-to-day grind of the NBA, teams don’t have that luxury. If there’s an injury, oddsmakers make an immediate assessment of the impact that injury will have on the team. An injury to a key player not only has an effect on the pointspread but the total, as well.

While injuries are part of the game, it’s naïve to suggest that a player is worth a certain amount of points. “It depends on the matchup,” pointed out a noted oddsmaker. “For example, San Antonio’s Tim Duncan might be worth more against the Nuggets than, say, the Trail Blazers. If the spread at home was going to be San Antonio -7 over Denver with Duncan, without him it might be -2 so in that situation, Duncan would be worth five points. But say the Spurs are playing at home against the Trail Blazers. With Duncan, the spread might be -14. Without him, San Antonio still would have a considerable edge in talent over Portland and you probably weren’t going to see Duncan around at the end of a blowout anyway, so the line might be -11, meaning Duncan was worth only three points in that scenario. So it all depends on the matchup.”

BETS AND PIECES: Most future books list defending NBA champion Miami as a slight favorite to repeat this season. The Heat didn’t lose anyone to free agency meaning that Head Coach Pat Riley still can turn to a deep and talented cast that includes Dwayne Wade, Shaquille O’Neal, Antoine Walker, Jason Williams and Udonis Haslem. Prices vary, of course, but those interested in NBA betting futures shouldn’t have difficulty finding 7/2 on the Heat.

If Miami fails to win back-to-back titles, which is no easy task, look for San Antonio, Detroit, Dallas or Phoenix, most of them in the 4/1 to 6/1 future book betting range, to be the new champions.

The Spurs still play defense with a passion and have a top-notch scoring triumvirate in Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili while the Pistons are hoping that Nazr Mohammed, who fled San Antonio, can help fill the hole in the middle left by the departure of Ben Wallace to Chicago.

The Mavericks strengthened themselves by adding Devean George, Austin Croshere and Anthony Johnson in separate deals. They’ll help a nucleus that includes Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry and Josh Howard.

The Suns are a bit of an unknown because of the questionable condition of Amare Stoudemire’s knee. If he’s healthy, Phoenix will have plenty of firepower with Steve Nash and Shawn Marion. If Stoudemire is a liability, the Suns won’t shine.

The bottom line? NBA betting, whether it is the daily grind or futures, can be tricky but astute bettors may also find it profitable.

Sportsbooks Add Elections - To Sports Betting Lines Menus

It was just hours after George W. Bush had been re-elected President of the United States in 2004 that sportsbooks began posting betting lines on who would win a four-year lease on the Oval Office in 2008.

John McCain, the Arizona Senator, and Hilary Clinton, the Senator from New York, remain the frontrunners for the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively. McCain, because of his maverick nature, has appeal with moderates, swing voters and conservative Democrats. That would be a formidable foe in the general election but, ironically, that same independent streak—-he strayed from conservative orthodoxy on judges, taxes and gay rights–could hurt him in the GOP nomination process where Evangelical Christians and conservative activists, groups less than enamored with his stance on those issues, are a formidable voting block, particularly in the primaries.

Clinton has the opposite problem. While the former First Lady is wildly popular in Democratic circles and, should she decide to run, would be difficult to beat for the party’s nomination, remains a polarizing figure and could have difficulty winning a general election where many already have a fixed, negative opinion of her.

That said, most betting lines still favor a McCain-Clinton showdown in 2008, although juicy, double-digit prices abound for other hopefuls such as former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani (R), Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R), former Vice President Al Gore (D), Indiana Senator Evan Bayh (D), Massachusetts Senator John Kerry (D), former North Carolina Senator John Edwards (D), Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (R), retired General Wesley Clark (D) and Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D).

Posting betting lines and/or betting on the outcome of presidential elections are not new. The practices gained attention in 1948 when legendary oddsmaker and gambler Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder predicted that heavy underdog Harry S. Truman, who had been elevated to the presidency when Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in 1945, would beat GOP standard-bearer and heavy favorite James Dewey, the Governor of New York.

Snyder based his prediction on the fact that Dewey wore a mustache and his belief that women would find that the facial hair made Dewey look “sneaky.”

At least that’s the way the story goes.

Truman did prevail at the ballot box, famously holding up a newspaper whose headline erroneously proclaimed Dewey the winner.

Recognizing that the 2008 election may be a bit too distant for most bettors, many sportsbooks have posted betting lines in this year’s midterm election, Nov. 7.

The most prominent betting line asks bettors to wager whether the Democrats will regain control of the House of Representatives. Democrats need to pick up 15 seats to wrest control of the 435-seat body from Republicans for the first time since 1994. With an unpopular war in Iraq, low approval numbers for President Bush, and a series of scandals plaguing the Republican Party, most books have the Democrats favored to take over the House.

The Senate, where Democrats need six seats to regain a majority, is another matter. While it’s looking increasingly likely that Democrats will hold all their seats (New Jersey is a problem), as well as pick up seats in Montana, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Rhode Island, getting to six will be difficult. There are three (possibly four) more opportunities.

Claire McCaskill (D) is running neck-and-neck with Senator Jim Talent (R) in Missouri, where stem cell research (she supports it, he doesn’t) is a big issue while Harold Ford (D) is trying to prove that an African American can win in Tennessee, where Bob Corker is trying to hold the seat for Republicans.

A series of gaffes have made Senator George Allen (R) vulnerable to the challenge of former Secretary of the Navy Jim Webb (D) in Virginia while in Arizona, Jim Pederson (D) is attempting to come from behind to beat Senator John Kyl (R), the author of the recently passed ban on Internet wagering.

Many sportsbooks have a betting line on whether the Democrats will gain control of the Senate (“No” still is favored over “Yes”) while some enterprising wagering outlets have betting lines on many of the individual races. Others still offer index wagering on how many Senate seats the Democrats will gain.

An index wager might look like this:

How many Senate seats will the Democrats gain in the 2006 election?

0-220/1
3-4 2/1
exactly 5 8/5
6 or more 7/5

In addition to races for the Presidency, the Senate and the House, some sportsbooks also have betting lines on several Governor contests. What it all means is while some citizens will cast their votes at the ballot box, others will express their opinions with cold hard cash.

Two or more Sushi Chef symbols on the pay-line create winning combinations. What On Earth is a 5-reel, 9 pay-line video slot with an extra terrestrial theme. What On Earth is filled with asteroids, flying saucers, rockets, and cherry comets. One symbol pays out $4, two symbols pay out $20, three symbols pay out $200, four symbols pay out $1,000, and all five What On Earth symbols pay out $7,500.

To win any of the big jackpots above, you need to place the maximum bet. However, the maximum bet on a particular slot machine can be $400 or more. Therefore, it is important that you decide beforehand how much you wish to spend at a casino. Don’t exceed your spending limit should you lose, and always quit while you are ahead.
