If Casino came out before Goodfellas, Casino would be the champ and Goodfellas would be the lame duck.
As individual pictures, I think Casino is much much better than Goodfellas.

Gene has some valid criticisms, and I agree that it’s uneven, but I still don’t see how he could give it thumbs down. The visuals alone are enough to recommend it.

thats a horribly flawed statement. yes you might expect genius from scorsese, but this was a great movie. 4 out of 5 easily.

I had pretty much the same reaction as Siskell. Any other director, it’s a great movie. The expectations with Scorsese are just higher.
And Sharon Stone was awful.

My only complaint wit this film is with Joe Pesci’s character which is exactly like the character he played in Goodfellas….,far too similar…apart from that its a great movie..

Not only that, but he would have gone on about how like Scorsese it was! He knows nothing. Just another person w. an opinion. Whatever.

Go suck your fathers dick. Do not disrespect Siskel. This is the best part of their show, when they disagree you idiot!
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
i think goodfellas is better but i personally like joe pesci more in this film.
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
in most cases when siskel and ebert are indifferent in their reveiws im usually on siskels side… this however is not one of those times… this movie is epic

I felt like it was “Goodfellas” Part 2. Scorcesee should have cast different actors other than De Niro and Pesci. For me, I was thinking “I just saw these characters in Goodfellas!”
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
I can see where Siskel was coming from in this review, but I respectfully disagree. I do agree that if this wasn’t a Martin Scorcesee feature, Siskel probably would have raved about it.
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Siskel is right in the sense that Casino is the poor man’s Goodfellas. But a lesser Goodfellas is still better than almost every other movie out there.
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Let’s face it; Siskel never always had the best reviews, and neither did Ebert. I mean, Siskel gave Scarface, Casino and Silence of the Lambs thumbs down, but The Cable Guy thumbs up. That’s just how some movie critics, and people in general, are.
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Why does it have to break new ground for it to be a good movie?
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Gene Siskel is a jackoff. Sorry, WAS a jackoff. Casino is a great film; entertaining from start to finish.
Yes it’s about mobsters, yes there’s DeNiro and Pesci, but I found it easy to appreciate this movie on its own merits without constantly thinking about Goodfellas.

The reason some people consider “Casino” to be an unofficial sequel to “Goodfellas” is Joe Pesci. Had Scorsese cast another actor in the role of Nicky Santoro, viewers wouldn’t be so tempted to compare the two films. As much as I love “Casino,” I’ll admit that Pesci did his usual mafia tough guy bit; really didn’t bring anything new to his performance.
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
I agree with him, actually. But, I love it all the same.
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
wow siskel totally failed at this
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
this is a real good movie!!!! think of it this way. Scorsese is an artist.. All his movies hang up in a gallery.. you walk around and each picture tells a different story with the same invisible hand. Thats like saying that aall of rembrants work looks the same so it has no value… or pollack…. dali… etc. or that all edger allan poe’s work is all dark.. yada yada…. He is the master of the ganster flick…

“The town’ll never be the same.”
Imagine Clark Griswold in THIS Vegas.

Siskel = FAIL
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Casino is a great movie, but it should not be compared to other Scorsese’s classics. Sure Casino is similar to Goodfellas, they share some of the same cast and it is a mob movie. So what? Casino is a classic in its own way, a truly original and unforgettable movie. It ain’t Goodfellas 2, not at all. Casino is better than 90% of the movies out there!
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Casino is a good and entertaining film but it is not a great film. If Scorsese only had Casino then he wouldn’t be remembered, but thats not the case. Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull were influential films and better then Casino. Some may disagree, but Scorsese is at his best in these three films.
November 29th, 2009 at 9:32 am
I have to admit I felt the same as Gene on this one. I really wanted to like it too, but IMO it was too similar to Goodfellas in feel which was a far superior film, and it just went too far in certain scenes. There was a lot to like in the movie, but the problems that it had were insurmountable for me.
I understand I’m in the minority here though and I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind, I’m just saying that Gene was not alone in his impression of the film.

Siskel was wrong on this one in my opinion. Even now Casino still feels fresh and alive, certainly better than any of the new dramas being released today.
